He may not be able to lay claim to having invented the Mini Moog, dated Heidi Klum, or have been Punk’d on MTV. But with 10 years of turntable and studio skills under his belt, Cass is able to lay claim to something really quite cool… a DJ style and production sound that is genuinely all his own. Playing his own unique sound, his inspired randomness encompasses the best from driving atmospheric techno, to those dirty broken beats, through to tripped out house and beyond. His sets are always varied and inspired, and over the past decade he has championed his sound throughout Australia, Asia, South America, North America and Europe to a worldwide audience playing events at clubs such as Cream, Spundae & Twilo and more recently headlining with Orbital in Greece and playing at Fabric in London.
Not only a top DJ, Cass’ production work has been equally forward thinking. With early production partner Slide he found an able ally, forming a duo that crafted a number of truly classic records. The duo’s biggest hit Perception which featured on Sasha’s Ibiza GU, set the ball rolling by selling over 25,000 copies and follow ups Opera and Diablo further enhanced the reputation of them as magicians in the studio. He also released a number of solo singles, with Genesis being made Essential New Tune by Pete Tong on Radio 1. He has collaborated & remixed over the years with the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Tiesto, Kylie Minogue, Sean Cusick, Sasha, Jimmy Van M, Lee Burridge, Miss Kittin, Tiefschwarz, Royksopp, Satoshi Tomiie, Ultra Nate, Boy George, Hernan Cattaneo, Tom Mangan, Paolo Mojo, Andy Page and more. In fact with 40+ original tracks, and 30+ remixes both as a solo artist, or together with some of the biggest names in electronic music, Cass has shown that he is regarded as highly for his production skills as those he displays behind the decks.
However, not satisfied with just being a forward thinking DJ and producer, Cass also cut his teeth in label management with UK label Flying Rhino records. Once he had proved himself at Flying Rhino he began his own label with Lee Burridge and Pete Martin (Slide); Fire Recordings. Under his guidance the label quickly began to gain international respect. Not afraid to sign tunes that were different from the mainstream Fire quickly became recognised as a great source of quality underground sounds. Cass & Slides’ debut long player Burning The Candle At Both Ends, which was released in April 2002 through Fire, had heads turning in all four quarters as it combined the usual inspired Cass randomness with collaborations from the likes of such electronic luminaries as Danny Tenaglia and Meat Katie.
In the summer of 2002 he went solo and established his new label Sabotage, which had as its first release, his single Mind Rewind. With the arrival of 2005 comes his new single Giant and just after that Sabotage’s 10th release, and a schedule that includes many more impressive sonics. The Cass & Slide experience are back with the new single Lost Life which has already been signed to Wall Of Sound following on from his collaboration with Tom Mangan iknowuknow that also found favour with the powers that be at the home of Royksopp.
Sabotage is also the home for his new collaboration with Paolo Mojo under their heretic banner. With numerous remixes already under the belt, and their first mix CD (heretic - 1.0) out in June 2005 its all go on all fronts for the West London boys.
In August of 2005, together with Tom Mangan, Cass signed to Fine Recordings (home of Drama Society, Turntable Rockers and Tiefschwarz). The cunningly titled Cass & Mangan then produced some of the biggest remixes of the year for the Infadels for Wall of Sound, Daisy Daisy for Sunday Best and for the mighty Tiefschwarz themselves. They also found time to finish their first EP (the Shoes EP) for the label and DJ at Issst, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Herbal, Weekend in Berlin and to a packed house at the Notting Hill Carnival.
Whether on his own, or in partnership with his friends and peers, there’s something reassuring about an individual who’s not afraid to be just that.
